Gao Yutong, age 10, has been awarded the First Prize (Full Marks – First Place) in the A2 Group at the National Finals of the 11th China Youth Music Competition – Hummingbird Music Award, 2026.
Advancing from the provincial rounds to the national stage, her achievement speaks for itself. Yet what we wish to reflect upon is not merely the weight of this honour, but the quiet, dedicated journey this young girl has undertaken over the past five years.
Five years ago, Yutong first came to our studio as a small child, barely able to reach the keyboard. Over these years, she has progressed from struggling with finger stability to shaping a clear musical phrase, from slow score‑reading to confidently learning new pieces on her own, and from disliking scales to understanding that technique is the indispensable foundation of all expression. These transformations have been nurtured gradually, lesson by lesson, day by day, through consistent practice.
For this competition, she chose a work that demands refined structural control and interpretive discipline. The judges’ unanimous full‑mark assessment can be summarised in three words: precision, layering, and expression.
- Precision – the technical foundation: correct notes, accurate rhythm, clean articulation. This is the fruit of five years of solid basic training.
- Layering – the musical dimension: a clear balance between melody and accompaniment, logical dynamic shading, and a coherent voice‑leading structure. This is the result of meticulous attention to detail during lessons.
- Expression – the aesthetic level: she understood what the piece intended to convey and found her own voice to communicate it. This ability has grown through extensive listening, thoughtful reflection, and continuous artistic absorption.
At Yang Yang Piano Studio, a teaching system – from the daily instruction provided by our Master’s‑degree faculty to Professor Yang’s rigorous oversight and mentorship at every critical stage – has been the backbone of this achievement. Every step, from technical drilling to musical interpretation, from knowing when to encourage to when to patiently wait, reflects years of pedagogical experience and genuine care.
Yang Yang Piano Studio does not train mere “playing machines.” Its goal is to cultivate musicians who possess solid technique, expressive vitality, and the confidence to perform on any stage – young artists who can independently read, understand, and interpret any piece placed before them.
Yutong has embodied this ideal.
